HEATHER ROBERTS
Gateway Tool Lending Library
DESIGN GOAL:
The library is designed for the local community to have access to tools, knowledge, and social support. It is important for the library to be designed for the entire community with every visitor feeling welcome and included. Due to the high foot traffic expected and the inevitable wear and tear on the building, the design places emphasis on durability and ease of maintenance. These design decisions will create a smaller overall carbon footprint and increase the lifespan of the building.
CONCEPT:
The design for Gateway is inspired by the stunning scenery around Anchorage, Alaska. Natural elements and allusions to nature will be found throughout the design, while modern architecture, large panes of glass, and contrasting elements will make the design fresh and current.
Blue and beige, found in the water, mountains, sky and landscape will be the two predominant colours. A cool blue, juxtaposed with warm beige and putty neutrals, creates an interior that mirrors the distinction between the cold and beautiful exterior and the warm and inviting atmosphere inside. A very dark blue and black will provide contrast with the lighter colours to create a modern feel.
LOCATION:
Anchorage, Alaska
The community of Anchorage, Alaska is varied and wide spread. The library will address and cater to as many aspects of the community as possible, including the surrounding First Nations bands, outlying community members, transient workers, and previously incarcerated people.
